Agriculture is the valley’s main activity, reflected in a simple way of life, closely tied to the land, the water and the rhythm of the seasons. It shows in the farm paths, in conversations, in local produce, and in a cuisine that still speaks of the land. The valley holds on to knowledge, skills and stories you can discover by walking through its villages and fields, and by talking with the people who live here.
For generations, residents have learned to farm land that is difficult due to its slopes, yet fertile thanks to the water and mild climate. This has given rise to a singular landscape of terraces, vegetable gardens and Mediterranean and subtropical crops, where avocados, olives, almonds, cherries, chestnuts and vineyards all grow side by side.

step into a legacy of cultures
The first Hispano-Muslim settlers found in Los Guájares a refuge among the mountains, rich in water and fertile for farming.
Their Almohad legacy still lives on in the layout of the villages, the narrow streets, the passageways, the irrigation channels, the terraces, and sites like El Castillejo, an old fortified settlement known as the “Andalusian Machu Picchu.” Added to that memory are the churches, festivals and traditions brought to the valley by the Christian world.
From that coexistence and blending of Muslim and Christian communities comes a unique history that will accompany you on every walk through the valley.
three villages
three ways to live the valley
Los Guájares is made up of three villages: Guájar Fondón, Guájar Faragüit and Guájar Alto. Three small, close-knit villages, each with its own personality, united by the river, the paths, the history and a strong rural identity.
Guájar Fondón keeps the closeness of the water, the irrigation channels and agricultural life. Guájar Faragüit is the main village of the municipality, home to most of the services and known for its old town and narrow streets. Guájar Alto, the highest and most remote, offers open views, silence and a very direct connection to the mountains.
During your stay, you’ll be able to explore all three villages, discover their character, and choose which one you’d like to experience the valley from.
